Rajul Gajjar Appointed as GTU's First Female Vice-Chancellor

New Delhi: Rajul Gajjar has been appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of Gujarat Technological University (GTU), a significant development announced by the state government on August 4, 2023. Gajjar's appointment marks a historic milestone as she becomes the first female Vice-Chancellor of GTU, the largest university in the state in terms of affiliated institutions and student enrollment.

This move follows closely after Neerja Gupta's appointment as the first female Vice-Chancellor of Gujarat University (GU) in June, which was established back in 1949. Rajul Gajjar, whose recent role was as the Principal of LD College of Engineering and Technology in Ahmedabad, holds a Ph.D. in the field of structural disasters from MS University Vadodara

Notably, she previously served as the acting VC of GTU faculty for a period of seven months in 2016. Her diverse career also includes roles such as an additional commissioner in the state education department in 2017 and as the VC of the Indian Institute of Teacher Education (IITE) in 2018. She also holds the distinction of being the first dean and later director of GTU

Gajjar's academic accomplishments include the publication of 66 research papers, authoring four books, and holding three patents.

Six months following the expiration of Naveen Sheth's term as GTU's Vice-Chancellor on December 30, 2022, Rajul Gajjar's appointment has been made.

According to the sources, a competitive selection process ensued, with two professors, both with political affiliations, were in the race for the prestigious VC position at GTU. These contenders were linked to RSS and BJP. The search committee deliberated over these candidates during their recent meeting, ultimately settling on Gajjar as the third contender.

Gajjar's tenure as a professor will conclude approximately four months after she reaches the age of 62. However, she will continue her service as Vice-Chancellor for the mandated three-year term, considering the retirement age for the VC role is set at 65 years.
