New Delhi: MIDS, Chennai, has announced the opening of applications for admission to its Ph.D. program. MIDS Chennai PhD Admission is open for candidates who have received fellowships from UGC or other funding agencies, with a minimum duration of three years.

MIDS Chennai offers PhD Admission in various disciplines. Candidates are invited to pursue doctoral research in Economics, History, and Development Studies at MIDS. Candidates who do not possess a fellowship but aspire to apply for the ICSSR Institutional Doctoral Fellowship are welcome to submit their applications for admission to the Institute. However, the final selection for the ICSSR fellowship is solely determined by ICSSR. Further, Candidates belonging to disadvantaged backgrounds or groups are strongly encouraged to apply.
MIDS, Chennai PhD Admission 2024: Eligibility Criteria
Candidates who have completed their Post-Graduation with a minimum of 55% marks (or 50% marks for SC/ST candidates) or an equivalent grade point average in Economics, History, or Development Studies are eligible to apply. The research areas available under the supervision of faculty members include:
- Environmental Economics
- Development economics
- Social, cultural, and intellectual history
- Social change in modern India
- Political movements in modern India
- New social movements in modern India
- Agricultural and rural studies
- Urban/semi-urban agriculture
- Studies on food, energy, and water
- Global warming and sustainable development
- Business, marketing, and trade.
- Comparative sub-national political economy and inequality
- Education & development; Migration; Local planning; Informality
- Employed candidates must provide written consent from their employer upon joining the program.
Candidates are required to fulfill one of the following criteria: clearing the National Eligibility Test (NET), holding an M.Phil degree, or possessing one year of research experience (although two years is preferable).
Age Limit: Candidates should not exceed 35 years of age (with a relaxation of 5 years for SC/ST candidates) as of April 8, 2024.

MIDS, Chennai PhD Admission 2024: Selection process
The Shortlisted candidates will undergo a written test and an interview. Applicants holding UGC-Junior Research Fellowships for PhD will be exempted from the written test and will be directly invited for the interview.
The final selection from the shortlisted candidates will be determined solely based on the quality of the research proposal, assessment of the candidate's performance in the written test and interview, and the availability of supervisors in their area of specialization.
