Jadavpur University Convocation; Students Receive Degrees, Certificates

New Delhi: As per the latest updates, Jadavpur University has organised its convocation ceremony and awarded degrees and certificates to around 5000 students. The event was held at the university campus on Sunday, December 24, 2023.

Buddhadeb Sau, the Jadavpur University's Ex-Officiating VC, opened the Jadavpur University Convocation 2023 but did not address attendees or hand out the degrees. Instead, pro-VC Amitava Dutta awarded the degrees to students and addressed the convocation.

Earlier, Buddhadeb Sau was ousted as the university's presiding vice chancellor on disciplinary grounds by Governor CV Ananda Bose on December 23, 2023. Following the dismissal of Sau from the post of interim VC, the state higher education department allowed Sau to exercise his powers and perform the duty of declaring the convocation open in the interest of students.

“The state government’s communique allowed me to hold the court meeting just before the convocation and I went by the mandate. Everything was done in the interest of the students and I am thankful to the education minister (Bratya Basu) and his department. I also thank the chancellor (Bose) for allowing me to work all these days. But I would like to make it clear that I was asked to take over the post of interim VC and never hankered for it,” Sau said.

“I will act as per the law. As the officiating VC, it was my responsibility to complete the convocation process,” he added.

Jadavpur University Teachers Association (JUTA) General Secretary Partha Pratim Roy pointed out, “Sau has signed the certificates on the date he was removed from the post. We hope that will not be challenged. Otherwise, the certificates need to be signed again. We wish for the appointment of a full-time VC and immediate resolution of the impasse in the appointment of VCs of state universities like JU,” he added.
