IGNOU Launches MBA in Agribusiness Management


New Delhi: The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) School of Agriculture has recently launched a new distance MBA Course in Agribusiness Management. The aim of the course is to prepare future skilled professionals that will boost the agricultural sector and farmer’s economy of the country.

As per the IGNOU, the foundation of the MBAABM program lies in the fact that despite significant growth in the Agriculture sector, there is a need to develop management competency in the farming community and allied stakeholders involved in backward and forward agricultural activities.

The duration of the MBA ABM Course is two years, but you will get the opportunity to complete it in a maximum of four years. Admission to the course will open from the July session 2024. If you have a bachelor’s degree in any subject from any recognised university, you will be eligible for the course.

The goal of this new curriculum is to create business experts who can profitably manage agro-based enterprises and farm businesses. The course targets a diverse range of participants, including fresh graduates, progressive farmers, agricultural extension workers, traders, intermediaries, technicians, managers in agro-industries, and enterprises dealing with farming inputs and outputs. It also caters to professionals from non government organisations (NGOs), cooperatives, farmers producers organisation (FPOs), self help groups (SHGs), corporate entities, and financial and marketing organisations. The MBA ABM Course is ideal for startups, entrepreneurs, market researchers, managers, and personnel from government and non-governmental organisations involved in agriculture and allied sectors.

The major objectives of the programme are to generate competent business professionals in agriculture, food, rural, and allied sectors; fostering startups and entrepreneurship among farmers, intermediaries and traders within the agri-business chain.

It seeks to equip these professionals with specific managerial skills, develop expertise in managing the techno-commercial aspects of agribusiness and impart the knowledge necessary to effectively address national development plans, agricultural policies and global trade.

The program focuses on agribusiness management and policies, project management, commodity trading, production and supply chain management, procurement and materials management in agribusiness, along with a significant project work component.
