CUSAT To Introduce New Courses, Increase Focus on Research

New Delhi: The Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) is planning to introduce new and unique programs for the academic year 2024-25. PG Sankaran, Vice Chancellor of CUSAT shared that CUSAT is preparing to launch a new MSc program in Marine Genomics, an Executive MBA program, and a BSc-LLB program.

The new programs in CUSAT are already being advertised. The university has also planned for a joint dual MS in electronics alongside the University of St Petersburg, Russia.

CUSAT to Make BTech Program More Flexible for Students

In addition to the new courses, CUSAT is also planning to make its BTech courses more flexible. The plan is to introduce two tracks for the students to choose from: an internship track for students who want to go directly into the industry and a regular track.

In the internship track, students can skip the papers in their last semester and directly start working even before they graduate. The regular track will be for students who want to complete their core papers as per the timeline of the University. CUSAT has also recruited many young faculty members in the past few years, with a strong focus on increasing the amount and level of research put out by the University.

CUSAT’s Plans for Increasing Research Opportunities

The University aims to increase its H-Index by focusing on research work among faculty members, research scholars, and students. According to Vice Chancellor PG Sankaran, “Our current H-Index in research is 118; we want to improve this to 175-200 in the next five years. Our research publications are at 1,000; we aim for 2,000.”

The university also incentivizes research by giving awards to research scholars, inviting international faculty to visit CUSAT, and allotting a fund of INR 40 lakh so that CUSAT members may participate in international conferences. The university has also received INR 20 crore from the natural spice industry to start a research center and collaborated with Geojit Financial Services for another research center for environmental social governance (ESG) studies.

CUSAT VC PG Sanakran also highlighted other collaborations that the University has signed off on. He said, “We have also started a collaboration with the Fertilisers and Chemicals Travancore Limited (FACT). They have instituted a Chair here and are providing Rs 10 lakh every year for research on safety engineering… The Ministry of Earth Sciences sanctioned Rs 8 crore for our Advanced Centre for Atmospheric Radar Research (ACAR) this January.”
