Anna University has increased the internal assessment marks' weightage from 20% to 40% in its engineering courses.

According to the reports, the cumulative grade point average (CGPA) for getting first class at Anna University has been brought down from 7 CGPA to 6.5 CGPA.

Further, the data shows that only 25% of the engineering students were able to clear all the subjects in the first semester in January 2019.

Now, with the new regulation, all the theory courses with laboratory components will have 50% : 50% weightage for internal assessment and end-semester exams. Whereas, it will be 60% weightage for internal assessment in the end semester exams for the laboratory courses.

The varsity's new regulation will permit the students to take a study break for a minimum of a year for job prospects or entrepreneurship. The 2017 rule stated, the students had to mandatorily complete arrears in 4 attempts was also scrapped off.

A University official had stated earlier that study breaks were allowed only for the medical grounds. The new changes in the internal assessment weightage were a part of varsity’s plan to impart uniformity in the engineering education offered at affiliated colleges, autonomous colleges, and university departments.

Anna University affiliated colleges follow a pattern of 80% : 20% weightage system for end-semester exams and internal tests, whereas the autonomous colleges and university departments follow 60%: 40% and 50%:50% weightage system.

As a part of the current rule, students will be able to do two courses in a semester against one course. Further, the university has planned a major overhaul of its syllabus from the next academic year to equip students according to the industry requirements.

According to the new regulations, there will be two new internal assessments in each semester and each assessment will be conducted for a total of 100 marks. A separate assignment or case study or seminar will carry out 40 marks whereas a written exam will be conducted for the remaining 60 marks.

As a result, a candidate's marks for 200 will be converted to 40 marks. Similarly, the end-semester exams will be conducted for a total of 100 marks and the marks will be converted to 60 marks.

The main objective is to make the engineering students more capable and employable along with giving them the right guidance and assistance in research and higher education.

R Velraj, Vice-chancellor, Anna University said, that the new syllabus of the courses will be diversified. It will also provide flexibility and convenience to the students by giving them more choices.

Each student has different requirements, where some of them want to pursue research and higher studies and other students want to just excel in their administrative services or engineering industry works. As a result, the varsity’s aim is to accommodate all the types of students' needs in the new syllabus, Velraj concluded.
