Chinese University of Hong Kong Admission Deadlines for Indian Students

Chinese University of Hong Kong runs one main September intake each year, which carries most undergraduate and taught postgraduate programmes, plus a smaller January entry for a handful of courses. Dates below come from the official CUHK Admissions and CUHK Graduate School pages. "TPg" means Taught Postgraduate (coursework masters), "RPg" means Research Postgraduate (MPhil and PhD), and "Non-local" is the applicant category Indian students fall into.

Rates below are set per CUHK’s Graduate School admissions page and the non-local undergraduate FAQ. Programme-level rounds may close earlier when quotas fill, so file early rather than at the final cut-off.

Currency note: All INR figures in this article use HKD 1 = INR 12.3078, the live rate on 1 October 2026. Live rates may vary, so confirm with your bank before remitting.

CUHK’s primary intake for Indian students is September 2027, where most programmes open.

Chinese University of Hong Kong Eligibility for Indian Students

Chinese University of Hong Kong uses two tracks for Indian applicants: a non-local undergraduate route built on Class XII plus English, and a postgraduate route built on a recognised Bachelor’s degree plus English. The academic floors below are institution-wide minimums. Programme-level cut-offs run higher, especially at the Business School, Medicine, Nursing, and Computer Science and Engineering.

Core thresholds published on the CUHK non-local admissions FAQ and the Graduate School requirements page:

  • UG general entry: Class XII (CBSE, ISC, state board) with a strong overall aggregate, typically 85 percent and above, plus the subject prerequisites of the chosen programme.
  • UG English: IELTS 6.0 overall, or SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing 590, or TOEFL iBT 79. BBA and Hotel Management lift the IELTS floor to 6.5.
  • PG general entry: Bachelor’s degree with honours not lower than Second Class, roughly a 60 to 65 percent Indian aggregate or CGPA 6.5 and above on a 10 scale.
  • PG English: IELTS Academic 6.5, or TOEFL iBT 79, or TOEFL paper-based 550, or GMAT Verbal band 21.
  • Test validity: IELTS and TOEFL are valid for 2 years from the test date, GMAT for 5 years.

Chinese University of Hong Kong IELTS Waiver for Indian Students

CUHK waives the IELTS requirement if your Bachelor’s degree was fully taught in English at a recognised university. Most Indian applicants from English-medium universities (IITs, NITs, central universities, private universities that teach in English) qualify. You will usually be asked to upload a medium of instruction letter from your college registrar instead of an IELTS score. The waiver is at the admissions team’s discretion, and competitive programmes often still want a test score for shortlisting.

Chinese University of Hong Kong PG Programmes and English Scores

Chinese University of Hong Kong offers over 150 taught postgraduate programmes across the Business School, Faculty of Engineering, Medicine, Science, Social Science, Education, Law, and Arts. The table lists the programmes Indian applicants file for most. "English Req. Min." reflects the CUHK Graduate School floor used by each programme; individual departments can set a higher bar.

Taught masters base tuition at CUHK sits in the HKD 180,000 to HKD 580,000 (INR 22.15 Lakhs to INR 71.38 Lakhs) range per programme, depending on faculty and specialisation. For a programme-level breakdown, see the course-wise fees breakdown on Collegedunia. Cost of attendance (rent, insurance, local travel) is covered on the CUHK Fees page.

Planning note: The MSc Nursing track asks for IELTS 7.0, not the general PG floor of 6.5. Indian nursing applicants who clear the clinical requirements but score 6.5 overall are routinely declined on English alone, so target 7.0 at your first test attempt.

Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official CUHK Graduate School page for your chosen programme before applying.

CUHK Full-time MBA Experience and Test Requirements

Chinese University of Hong Kong PhD Admissions and HKPFS Fellowship

Chinese University of Hong Kong admits PhD and MPhil candidates through its Research Postgraduate (RPg) track. Entry needs a recognised Master’s degree, or a Bachelor’s with Second Class Honours (upper division) plus one year of research-based master’s study demonstrating research capacity.

Chinese University of Hong Kong PhD Deadlines and Fellowship

  • HKPFS deadline: 1 December 2026 for a September 2027 start. This is the single most important date for Indian PhD applicants, since HKPFS is the premier Hong Kong-wide research fellowship.
  • General PhD round: 31 December 2026 through the CUHK Online Application System. Some departments keep rolling vacancies open till 30 April 2027.
  • HKPFS funding: Monthly stipend of HKD 28,350 (around INR 3.49 Lakhs), equal to HKD 340,200 per year (around INR 41.87 Lakhs), plus a conference travel allowance of HKD 14,200 per year (around INR 1.75 Lakhs). Awarded for the normative study period of 3 years.
  • CUHK Postgraduate Studentship: HKD 18,730 per month (around INR 2.31 Lakhs), paid to RPg students not selected for HKPFS.

Chinese University of Hong Kong PhD Application Steps

You apply twice for HKPFS: once on the Research Grants Council HKPFS Initial Application platform (October to December 2026) and once on the CUHK Online Application System naming CUHK as your first-choice university. Secure a supervisor’s email endorsement before you submit; departments weight that signal heavily during shortlisting. Interviews are conducted online for Indian applicants and typically run January to March 2027.

Planning note: Email prospective supervisors by late October 2026 at the latest. The HKPFS 1 December cut-off looks far away, but you need 4 to 6 weeks for a supervisor to confirm interest and sign a letter of support, plus time to redraft your research proposal around their current grants.

Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official CUHK Graduate School page for your chosen programme before applying.

Chinese University of Hong Kong Application Process

Chinese University of Hong Kong uses two separate portals: the CUHK Online Application for non-local undergraduate entry, and the CUHK Graduate School Online Application System for taught postgraduate and research postgraduate entry. The MBA runs on its own Business School portal. Expect each application to take 4 to 6 hours spread across a week, mostly on uploading documents and drafting your statement.

Chinese University of Hong Kong Step-by-Step Application

  1. Create an account on the relevant CUHK portal (UG or PG), confirming your email within 24 hours.
  2. Fill in personal, academic, and professional details. Add every university and employer, with dates matching your transcripts and CV.
  3. Upload scanned documents (passport bio page, Class XII and Bachelor’s transcripts, degree certificate, IELTS or TOEFL score report, SOP, CV, LORs).
  4. Pay the application fee of HKD 300 (around INR 3,692) for PG or HKD 450 (around INR 5,538) for UG on the portal, by Visa, Mastercard, UnionPay, or PayPal.
  5. Submit, then nominate referees so CUHK can request LORs directly from them by email.
  6. Supplementary materials (research proposals, portfolios, interview invitations) are added within 1 month of submission as departments request them.
  7. Track status on the portal; final decision emails arrive 6 to 16 weeks after your submitted round closes.

Chinese University of Hong Kong Admission Decisions and Offer Timeline

Decisions roll out across the cycle. MBA Round 1 and Round 2 decisions land within 6 to 8 weeks of the deadline. Taught masters offers for most CUHK programmes release between January 2027 and June 2027, with Business School and Engineering programmes often giving earlier decisions on strong applications.

  • Offer window: Accept within 2 to 4 weeks of the offer letter date, by paying the HKD 20,000 (around INR 2.46 Lakhs) non-refundable deposit on the portal.
  • Conditional offers: Common for applicants in their final Bachelor’s semester. Conditions typically ask for final transcripts and degree certificate by 31 August 2027.
  • Deferral: One-year deferral is allowed for most CUHK taught masters on written request within 2 weeks of the offer. MBA deferrals are reviewed case by case and are rare.

Chinese University of Hong Kong Admission Documents Required

Chinese University of Hong Kong asks for scanned colour PDFs on upload, with originals verified only after you accept. Prepare the full set before you open the portal so you can submit in one sitting.

Chinese University of Hong Kong Acceptance Rate for Indian Students

Chinese University of Hong Kong does not publish an official institutional acceptance rate. Based on applicant-volume patterns across its most popular programmes, the effective acceptance rate for non-local applicants sits in the 10 to 20 percent band, with the MBA, MSc Finance, MSc Business Analytics, MSc Computer Science, and MBChB running the tightest intake.

Chinese University of Hong Kong Programme-Level Competition

  • Business School (MBA, Finance, Business Analytics): single-digit percentages on reported Indian applicant pools, round-driven.
  • Engineering (CSE, Information Engineering, Data Science): 15 to 25 percent, with early submissions getting materially better outcomes.
  • Public Health, Nursing, Education: 20 to 30 percent for Indian applicants meeting the English floor.
  • Arts and Social Sciences: 25 to 35 percent at taught masters level.

Chinese University of Hong Kong Admission Strength Signals

CUHK sits at QS World 18 for 2027, up from 32 the prior year, and in the top 10 across Asia. For context on where it falls globally, see Collegedunia’s CUHK ranking band. The sharper the subject ranking, the sharper the admissions bar: Nursing (QS 5), Linguistics (10), Data Science and AI (19), and Communication and Media Studies (12) are the hardest to crack.

Insider note: Indian applicants with a 70 percent and above Bachelor’s, IELTS 7.0, and 2 to 4 years of relevant experience report conversion rates close to 30 to 40 percent at taught masters outside the Business School. Most rejections at the margin come from weak SOPs, not weak transcripts.

Hong Kong Student Visa for Chinese University of Hong Kong Admits

After you accept the CUHK offer and pay the deposit, CUHK’s International Student Affairs Section issues your sponsorship documents. You submit the Hong Kong Immigration Department’s Form ID995A through CUHK, which forwards it to the Immigration Department as your local sponsor. Processing takes 6 to 8 weeks from a complete submission, so start the moment your offer letter arrives, and no later than 3 weeks after.

You will need a scanned passport bio page, 2 recent passport-size photographs, CUHK admission letter, financial proof covering 1 year of tuition and living (around HKD 300,000 or INR 36.92 Lakhs), proof of accommodation if arranged, and the HKD 230 (around INR 2,831) visa fee. The approved e-Visa is valid for entry into Hong Kong within 3 months of collection. CUHK’s International House and student hostels handle on-arrival registration, Hong Kong ID card appointment, and bank account setup within your first 2 weeks on campus.

2026 update: Indian applicants have reported faster 4 to 5 week turnarounds in the current cycle when financial documents are complete and translated into English on the first attempt. Incomplete bank statements remain the leading cause of 2 to 3 week delays.

Tips and Checklist for Chinese University of Hong Kong Admissions

The following tips and steps are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at Chinese University of Hong Kong, where early scholarship decisions, English waivers, and supervisor-driven PhD admissions change what to do when.

  • Book IELTS 10 to 12 weeks before your target round so the score report reaches CUHK with 2 weeks of buffer.
  • Request transcripts and medium-of-instruction letters 8 weeks before deadline; Indian universities routinely take 4 to 6 weeks for consolidated marksheets.
  • Email prospective PhD supervisors by late October 2026 to meet the 1 December HKPFS cut-off with a signed endorsement.
  • File MBA by Round 1 or Round 2 if you want to be competitive for Scholarship for Excellence funding.
  • Tailor your SOP to the department, not the university. Name 2 to 3 CUHK faculty whose work matches your interests and cite one recent paper each.
  • Translate every regional-language document (board certificates in Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, etc.) into English by a notarised translator before upload.
  • Keep HKD 10,000 (around INR 1.23 Lakhs) ready for the HK$230 visa fee, courier charges, and HKID card formalities within your first week after the offer.
  • Submit the Hong Kong visa paperwork within 3 weeks of the offer letter to clear the 6 to 8 week Immigration Department processing window before your September 2027 start.

Indian students targeting the September 2027 intake at Chinese University of Hong Kong should treat the 31 October 2026 MBA Round 1, 1 December 2026 HKPFS, and 7 January 2027 UG Regular Round as the three cycle anchors. File early, keep English scores above the programme-level floor, and factor in the 6 to 8 week visa window from offer to arrival.

Overview

First of all, the research of my supervisor was the main contributing factor behind my selection of this university. Also, Cuhk ranked as one of top universities in the world, currently at 39 according to QS world university ranking, also convinced me about its education standard and I went ahead with the application without any hesitation.
