Concept:
• The Vijayanagara Empire (1336–1646) shared its northern and eastern boundaries with several rival powers.
• These geopolitical relationships were defined by frequent conflicts over fertile tracts of land and strategic trade routes.
Step 1: Identifying northern rivals
To the north of the Tungabhadra River, the Vijayanagara Empire shared its border with the Deccani Sultanates.
The Bijapur Sultanate (ruled by the Adil Shahi dynasty) was a primary neighbor and a frequent adversary. The two powers constantly fought for control over the fertile Raichur Doab.
Step 2: Identifying eastern and western neighbors
To the northeast, the Vijayanagara Empire bordered the Gajapati kingdom of Odisha.
Other neighboring states included the Sultanates of Golconda and Ahmednagar. The combined forces of these neighbors eventually defeated Vijayanagara at the Battle of Talikota in 1565.
