Hormogones are small pieces of trichomes with one to many uniform cells provided with delicate, sometimes not easily perceptible, mucilaginous sheath. The formation of hormogonia is known only within the members of Nostocales and Stigonematales. Hormogonia are formed either by formation of special biconcave separation disc or by the death of one or more intercalary cells. They may be formed irregularly as in Nostoc, Oscillatoria and Lyngbya , on apical portion of branches as in Scytonema , on special branches as in Stigonema or from the intercalary meristematic zone as in Rivularia .
