Food safety means ensuring that food, at every point from production to the plate, is handled in ways that keep it free from contamination and safe to eat. It is not a single action but an ongoing effort covering hygiene, correct temperatures and freedom from harmful substances throughout the food chain.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) carries out this responsibility nationwide, and beyond simply writing rules, it acts on the ground in several practical ways. Two of these are described below.
Inspection and testing of food products: FSSAI conducts routine inspections of food businesses and collects samples of food items for testing in accredited laboratories. This lets the authority catch unsafe practices, such as the use of banned additives or spoiled ingredients, before contaminated food reaches large numbers of consumers, and it gives FSSAI the evidence needed to take action against violators.
Consumer awareness and education: FSSAI also runs public information campaigns and awareness drives, such as guidance on reading food labels, understanding "best before" dates, and recognising signs of adulteration. By helping the public make informed choices and report unsafe food, FSSAI extends food safety beyond regulation into everyday consumer behaviour.
Therefore, food safety is the practice of keeping food free from harm throughout its journey to the consumer, and FSSAI protects this through regular inspection and testing of food products alongside consumer awareness and education efforts.
