Step 1: Orexigenic neurons are appetite-stimulating neurons. The classic orexigenic (orexin and MCH containing) neurons have their cell bodies in the lateral hypothalamic area, historically called the feeding centre.
Step 2: Arcuate nucleus neurons project to these lateral hypothalamic orexin neurons. Activation of the lateral hypothalamic area increases food intake, while its destruction causes anorexia and weight loss, confirming its role as the hunger or feeding centre.
Step 3: The distractors belong elsewhere: the dorsal raphe is serotonergic, the locus coeruleus is the main noradrenergic nucleus controlling arousal, and the hippocampus is involved in memory. Hence the orexigenic neuron cell bodies lie in the lateral hypothalamic area.
