  • An extensive selection of optics courses is available to the student considering graduate studies in Optical Science and Engineering. Considerable interaction occurs with the Center for High Technology Materials and the optical research groups at the Air Force Research Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratories, Los Alamos National Laboratory and other organizations in Albuquerque. These facilities offer extensive opportunities for research work toward both the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees.
  • The Doctor of Philosophy in Optical Science and Engineering requires a minimum of 52 credit hours of graduate work, exclusive of a dissertation. Important: the total credit hours taken from Required courses and Elective courses should be 30 credit hours. A concentration is required for the degree.

Eligibility & Entry Requirement

  • If English is not your first language, you must take either the TOEFL, the IELTS, or Cambridge CPE or CAE. The minimum score on the TOEFL is at least 530 ( 213 on the computerized test, or 79 on the Internet-based test). The minimum score for the IELTS is 6.5; and for the Cambridge CPE or CAE is a C. Official test results must be sent directly to the University of New Mexico.
  • International students seeking graduate teaching assistantships, and whose native language is not English, may also be required to submit an acceptable score on the Test of Spoken English. Students who have received a bachelor's or graduate degree from an accredited institution in the United States, English-speaking Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, or New Zealand are exempt from submitting TOEFL scores.
