The major and minor can also accompany a number of different disciplines and degrees to provide students with a global context for their interests. The program also provides excellent preparation for students wishing to pursue graduate education in international studies, law or international business.
The program aims to achieve a global perspective through an interdisciplinary network of courses and experience that will lead to a Bachelor of Arts degree in international studies. The program is administered by a committee of faculty members from the various departments and colleges from which the courses are taken.
The international studies major requires 45 credit units (15 courses) plus evidence of competency in a foreign language usually amounting to 12 credit units (4 courses) depending on the foreign language experience of the student. In the major, four courses are taken as foundation elements before students choose 30 credit units (10 upper level courses) to pursue a specific region or topic with an international focus. Students are also required to complete a research and practicum course (3 credit units, 1 course) such as an internship, study abroad course, research methods course or independent study.
