- Research and development of condensed matter
- Research and development of engineering physics

- Learning outcomes:
- Students will demonstrate an understanding of core graduate-level theoretical knowledge in materials science.
- Students will demonstrate written and oral communication skills in communicating materials science- and physics-related topics.
- Students will design and conduct an experiment (or series of experiments) demonstrating their understanding of the scientific method and process. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the analytical methods required to interpret and analyze results and draw conclusions as supported by their data.
- Students will demonstrate proficiency in the acquisition of data using a variety of laboratory instruments and in the analysis and interpretation of such data.
- Students will utilize a wide range of printed and electronic resources and information technologies to support their research on physical systems and present those results in the context of the current understanding of physical phenomena.
- Students will demonstrate an understanding of the applications of numerical techniques for modeling physical systems for which analytical methods are inappropriate or of limited utility.
- Students will demonstrate a thorough understanding of the analytical approach to modeling physical phenomena.
- Students will demonstrate an understanding of the impact of physics and science on society.

Eligibility & Entry Requirement
Academic Eligibility:
- A Bachelor of Science degree in any science or engineering discipline which includes:
- a calculus sequence and differential equations;
- a calculus-based physics sequence; and
- two semesters of physical chemistry or thermodynamics and modern physics.
- Candidates for admission to the program are required to have a GPA of at least 3.00 on a 4.00 scale on the last 60 hours of course work.
- Submission of Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores from the General Test is required.
- Conditionally admitted students will be required to complete a minimum of nine hours of specified course work with a GPA of at least 3.00 to be advanced to full standing in the program.
- Proof of student’s proficiency in English is required if their primary language is not English. Persons who have completed one or more years of university-level study in the U.S. may be exempt at the discretion of the International Services Office. International students hailing from non-English speaking countries must submit TOEFL/IELTS... or any equivalent test score reports to meet the English proficiency requirement.
