For more than 100 years the School of Music has been central to the cultural climate at West Virginia University. For generations our internationally acclaimed faculty of teachers, artists, and scholars have prepared students for futures in music while contributing to the quality of life in Morgantown. Located in the Creative Arts Center the School of Music, along with the Schools of Art & Design and Theatre & Dance, comprise the College of Creative Arts.
School of Music Alumni have always, and will continue, to leave this fertile artistic environment to become successful teachers, performers, scholars, and leaders in the arts. This success has been here in West Virginia, throughout the nation and across the globe.
f you are interested in a career in music, you have a wide range of potential occupations from which to choose. Most fall into one of three basic categories: performing, composing or arranging, and teaching. To these ends, the School of Music offers specialized programs in performance, composition, and music education, all of which lead to the bachelor of music degree. Students who wish to specialize in music yet still explore the wonderful academic offerings of a large liberal arts institution can pusue the Bachelor of Arts in music. The Bachelor of Arts is also perfect for the student who wishes to combine the study of music with a non-music related field.
The performance curricula prepare you for the added career option of private studio teaching in the principal performance area. Piano majors in performance may choose an alternative emphasis in pedagogy, accompanying, or jazz. Courses of study can lead to a career in performance as a member of an ensemble or in composing or arranging music for performance. An emphasis in jazz in the performance curricula for band or orchestra instruments is available.
