- The Biology major at LMU encourages students to develop keen critical and analytical thinking skills and oral and written skills while providing a strong background in the discipline's core areas and gaining laboratory and field experience. Biology majors are well prepared for a career in the health professions (medicine, dentistry, etc.) as well as careers that span the biological sciences, including environmental biology, organismal biology, microbiology, physiology, molecular and cell biology, and plant biology. Additionally, the biology major prepares students for graduate programs in the biological and biomedical sciences. LMU's unique Los Angeles location allows for field studies in a diverse range of ecological habitats, including deserts, mountains, forests, offshore islands, wetlands, and beaches.
- The Biology Department is committed to introducing students to the excitement of science, promoting collaborative and interdisciplinary learning, and preparing students for their chosen career goals. We believe that students' participation in scientific research, both in the field and in the laboratory, and including subsequent data analysis and presentation of the results at conferences, can be a valuable part of undergraduate education.
- One of the strongest departments at the University, the Biology Department is dedicated to excellence in teaching. The primary goal of the Biology program is to give students a strong background in the core fields of biology. Majors develop skills in critical and logical thought, acquire knowledge of the fundamental areas of biology, gain experience in the laboratory and field, and develop ethical decision-making ability.
- The undergraduate program features intensive laboratory and field experience with close contact between students and faculty. All members of the Department hold a Ph.D. and are active as scholars in their respective fields. Strong features of the program are small class sizes and close personal attention to every student.
- The Bachelor of Arts in Biology program, designed for students who plan to enter careers in teaching, provides a strong liberal arts core and allows students to pursue course requirements in education during their undergraduate years.
