As well as providing a strong foundation in the disciplines of English, this major focuses on the preparation of teachers according to NCATE/NCTE and Illinois Content Area Standards for Educators. Students who seek Illinois secondary certification through the English education major must also apply for admission to the Department of Education's secondary education minor program and complete the courses required for that minor as well as the state certification requirements.

Eligibility & Entry Requirement
Academic Requirements:
- Submit official transcripts of high school and other education completed
- Official transcripts must be evaluated by an accredited agency such as ECE or WES
- Official transcripts must contain course by course evaluation showing that the applicant has achieved a high school diploma
- Submit a letter of recommendation attesting to the student’s ability to succeed in college and proficiency in college
- Submitting official SAT/ACT score is optional
- Submit English Language Proficiency test scores

- TOEFL: minimum 80 in IBT; 213 in CBT; 550 in PBT
