Northeastern University Social Studies

Social studies at Northeastern University prepares students to rigorously analyze the social, political, and economic spheres of society at the local and global levels. These program affords students the opportunity to acquire a multicultural and comparative perspective on social life. Northeastern’s Social studies offerings cover everything from gender and family violence, to law and criminality, human services, race and ethnicity, social movements, and urban social problems.

Students will be able to:

• Identify and describe key features of sociology as a discipline and a practice.
• Define theory and describe its role in building sociological knowledge.
• Compare and contrast basic theoretical orientations, including the historical context of the times and cultures in which they were developed colonialism and imperialism.
• Describe and apply the most commonly used research approaches, both qualitative and quantitative.
• Communicate sociological claims and arguments effectively, including showing an appreciation of culturally diverse audiences.
