Eligibility for PhD in USA Without GRE

Eligibility for a PhD in the USA without GRE requires a bachelor's and often a master's degree, a strong GPA of 3.0 or above, English scores, and a solid research profile. Research matters most.

With the GRE removed, your SOP, research, and LORs carry more weight. The eligibility criteria are:

  • A bachelor's degree, and often a master's, from an accredited institution.
  • A strong GPA, generally 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale.
  • English proficiency, TOEFL or IELTS, for non-native speakers.
  • SOP and research proposal, plus strong letters of recommendation.
  • Research experience, publications, and a clear faculty fit.

Note: Without the GRE, admissions weigh your research experience, publications, SOP, LORs and faculty fit most. Contact potential supervisors early, since a professor's interest in your research often decides funded PhD admission more than any single document.

Deadlines for PhD Without GRE 2026 2027

PhD deadlines fall earlier than Master's, usually December to January for the Fall intake, so the Fall 2026 window has largely closed and Fall 2027 is next. Apply early. Most PhD programs have one main Fall intake, with some rolling admissions.

Cycle Application window
Fall 2026 December 2025 to January 2026 (largely closed)
Spring 2026 September to November 2025 (closed)
Fall 2027 December 2026 to January 2027 (upcoming)

Most US PhDs without GRE are fully funded, with a tuition waiver, a yearly stipend of about USD 25,000 to 45,000, and health insurance, through TA, RA or fellowship roles. Funding does not depend on the GRE, so a waiver does not reduce your support.

Item Typical amount
PhD stipend (per year) USD 25,000 to 45,000 (about INR 24 to 43 lakh)
Tuition Usually fully waived
Health insurance Usually covered
Application fee USD 80 to 125 (about INR 7,600 to 11,900)

What full funding covers and what it does not:

  • Does not cover: the application fee, visa costs or your travel to the USA.

How to Apply for PhD Without GRE

To apply for a PhD without GRE, shortlist GRE-free programs, contact supervisors early, prepare your SOP and research proposal, then apply before the deadline. Faculty contact is key.

A funded PhD often starts with a professor who wants to work with you. The steps are:

  1. Shortlist programs that list the GRE as not required or waived.
  2. Contact potential supervisors 12 to 15 months before the intake.
  3. Prepare your documents, your SOP, research proposal, transcripts and LORs.
  4. Take an English test, such as TOEFL or IELTS, if you are a non-native speaker.
  5. Submit your application and pay the fee before the deadline.
  6. Secure funding through a teaching assistantship, research assistantship or fellowship.
  7. Accept your offer and apply for the F1 student visa.

Note: If a program says GRE optional, submit a score only if it is strong. A weak score can hurt more than no score, so for optional programs, skip the GRE unless your result clearly strengthens your application.

A PhD in USA without GRE is now a realistic path for Indian students, with universities like MIT, Stanford, Brown and Oregon State dropping or waiving the requirement. Focus on a strong research profile, contact supervisors early, then prepare your SOP, proposal and LORs carefully. Fall 2026 deadlines have mostly closed, so aim for Fall 2027 by applying between December 2026 and January 2027. With most PhDs fully funded regardless of the GRE, your research potential, not a test score, decides your success.
