This Environment, Development and Politics at University of Birmingham is a very novel programme in its title, content and approach. Its novelty arises from:
- Attention to howÊpowerÊandÊpoliticsÊaffects environment and development.
- How power and politics affects decision-making from theÊlocalÊto theÊglobal.
- The range of environment and development issues and situations covered, fromÊglobal climate change negotiationsÊtoÊcommunity-based natural resource management.
- There is aÊwide range of optional modulesÊto choose from, not only from within IDD and POLSIS, but from across the University.
- Students can undertakeÊindividual fieldworkÊfor their dissertations in an area and on a topic of their choice, subject to agreement with their supervisor. This provides a great opportunity to investigate an issue of interest, gain field experience and create networks essential for career development.
By the end of your study you will gain:
- An in-depth understanding of competing development theories and approaches and the ability to critically evaluate their strengths and weaknesses.
- An appreciation of and ability to use approaches to investigating and responding to linkages between the environment and development
- An in-depth understanding of contemporary themes and analytical approaches to understanding global environmental politics
- Writing skills to produce well-structured and coherent essays and reports, making good use of references.
- Oral presentation skills.
- Ability to access material from different sources including policy documents and other publications from governments and international organisations, documents from the internet, and from books and academic journals.
- The capacity to interpret and make use of material from the above sources.
Career:
The knowledge and skills gained in the programme will equip graduates for jobs in international, national and local government and non-governmental organizations, think tanks and consultancies.
