  • At the University of Newcastle, we've designed our Computer Science degree to train graduates capable of solving the world’s greatest challenges. When you study to be a computer scientist, you could help fight diseases by discovering biomarkers that allow early diagnosis. Perhaps you’ll develop more sophisticated online learning systems to support access to education. You might improve safety and security by mining the data captured in smart cities. Or develop virtual reality programs to help people recover from post-traumatic stress.
  • Computer scientists work on challenging, complex problems, developing the foundation of new software technologies, both theoretical and practical. Computer science is fundamental to the newest trends in computing, such as machine learning, autonomous systems, cybersecurity and virtual reality, among others.

VISA & Work Study

VISA

To determine whether a visa or entry clearance is required to study in the UK and understand the procedures upon arrival, prospective students should consider several key points:

Visa Requirements

  • Student Route Visa: For those intending to study in the UK for more than six months, a Student Route visa is mandatory. This visa category has replaced the previous Tier 4 General visa and applies to both new applicants and renewals.
  • EEA or Swiss Nationals: Since January 1, 2021, EEA or Swiss nationals without Settled or Pre-settled status may need a visa to study in the UK for more than six months.
  • Standard Visitor Visa: Students planning to study in the UK for less than six months may apply for a Standard Visitor visa.

Travel Guidelines

  • Timing: It is essential to travel to the UK only after receiving confirmation of the Student Visa approval from the UK Visa and Immigration authorities.
  • Validity: If granted an entry clearance visa, ensure travel occurs within the specified validity period. Traveling outside this period or before visa approval could impact the ability to commence studies.

Graduate Route Visa

  • Opportunity: The Graduate Route, effective July 1, 2021, permits graduates to stay in the UK for up to two years (three years for PhD students) after completing their studies to seek employment.
  • Application Process: Eligibility criteria and application details for the Graduate Route are available on the Home Office website.

Work Study

Enhancing career readiness, students have the option to undertake a transformative work placement spanning 9 to 12 months in any global organization. Facilitated by a dedicated university team, comprehensive support is provided to secure ideal placements between stages 2 and 3 of the degree program.

This invaluable opportunity allows students to apply theoretical knowledge in practical settings, fostering firsthand experience and honing professional skills essential to their field. Opting for a work placement extends the degree duration by a year, and this achievement is reflected in the degree title. Placement availability ensures flexibility, maximizing opportunities for students to gain meaningful industry exposure and enhance their future prospects as confident professionals.
