German is oneÊof Europe's most important languages for business and culture. It is frequently used as a second language in Eastern Europe, serving as a means of communication across international boundaries.ÊFluency in the German language, combined with knowledge of political and cultural developments in the German-speaking world, opens up career opportunities in many areas of Europe.

As a student of theÊGerman and Philosophy (Hons)Êprogramme offered by University of Kent, you do not so much learn about philosophy as learn to do it yourself. This includes not only studying major philosophies and philosophers, but also contributing your own ideas to an ongoing dialogue. You develop the ability to connect the most abstract ideas to the most concrete things in our experience.

In combination with German, you will be in an ideal position to tackle some of the worldÕs leading German-speaking philosophers, such as Heidegger, Goethe, Wittgenstein and Kant.

Between Stages 2 and 3, you spend a year studying or working abroad in Germany or Austria, which will greatly improve your understanding of German. On your return you could choose to complete a dissertation on a subject of relevance to both areas of your degree, such as a German philosopher.

Careers

Students of German have successfully completed work placements at a variety of different companies, including international giants such as Siemens and Bosch.Ê Not only do such well-known names look great on a CV, but the fact that you were using your language skills every day also makes this work experience even more impressive for employers in the UK, Europe and further afield.Ê

Other recent examples of internships include: the Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen in Mainz, a translation agency in Berlin, an oil company in Munich, and the German Bundestag (parliament).

The Philosophy Department at Kent takes employability seriously and all of our modules are designed to give you important skills that transfer to the workplace. These modules not only improve your grasp of philosophy, but teach you how to critically evaluate ideas, think through problems and clearly communicate even complex material.Ê

We offer opportunities to discuss and defend your ideas, to give oral presentations, to work both individually and as part of a group, all of which will equip you with useful instruments for your future careers, whatever they may be.

Recent graduates have gone into careers such as teaching, translation, accountancy, law, customs, finance, publishing, journalism and the civil service.
