SDS or Student Direct Stream is a visa processing program that helps students get their visas faster than the normal process. The program can be only availed by the students applying to any Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada. The SDS program is available for students from only a few selected countries. Alongside citizenship, students have to submit a number of documents as well.

Eligibility Criteria for Indian Students

Indian students who are applying through Student Direct Stream must meet some eligibility criteria. The required documents for Indian students are as follows.

  • Citizenship proof
  • Acceptance letter from any university
  • Proof of payment of first-year tuition fees
  • Students have to submit Guaranteed Investment Certificate or GIC of 6.12 lakhs INR
  • If any student is planning to study in Quebec, he/she must submit a Quebec Acceptance Certificate from the Ministry of Immigration
  • Medical exams (if needed)
  • Police certificate (if needed)
  • IELTS score of 6.0 or higher

Documents Required for SDS Visa Application

To apply for an SDS visa, Indian students have to submit proof of payment for their first-year tuition fees. The documents may include-

  • A DLI receipt
  • An official letter validating the tuition fee payment by the DLI
  • A bank receipt as proof of the tuition payment to the DLI

A Guaranteed Investment Certificate can be obtained from any financial institution registered on the Canadian Deposit Insurance company Website. Some of the institutions are as follows.

Who are not eligible for Student Direct Stream?

There is a specific list of countries whose students are eligible for this SDS new student visa program.

  • If any student is not a resident of those listed countries he/she will not be eligible for this scheme.
  • Students who live in any other country while still having citizenship of one of the listed countries, he/she will not be eligible.
  • Meeting the faster processing eligibility is mandatory. Those who do not meet the requirements, can not avail the SDS program.

What are the advantages of applying through Student Direct Stream?

Applying through Students Direct Stream or SDS has many benefits. Some of them are mentioned below.

  • Indian students willing to study in Universities in Canada can get a faster visa through the SDS program. While a normal visa takes around 2-3 months, SDS new student visa program takes only 4-6 weeks.
  • Students applying through SDS program are required to submit fewer financial documents than the others.
