Entrance Preview :
I gave the JEE entrance exam. I do not remember my scores (and they are not important as well because the format keeps evolving). I also did not specifically opt for this course, because they have you fill out a long preference sheet. So it was more as if I was assigned this course.
Course Curriculum Overview :
The course was almost entirely geared toward a career in research. This is not a good thing because the feedback from industry and careers students went into was not existent.
Internships Opportunities :
The college recruitment cell used to line up companies for internships but a majority of students got their internships through own networking. Some of the companies that came were Schlumberger, ITC, Unilever, Roland Berger, Deutsche Bank, VMS consultants, DAR.
Placement Experience :
By the end of January, 85% of students seeking jobs would get placed. Companies really ranged in salary offerings. I would say the range was 4.3 LPA to 22 LPA (not including foreign placement salaries which was not in Rupees). The median salary would be close to 8.5 LPA. The highest paying firms were McKinsey, BCG, Deutsche Bank, Schlumberger, Rio Tinto.
College Events :
We used to have a great technical festival called TechKriti which consisted of hackathons, robogames, electronic sports etc. We also had one of the largest cultural festivals called Antaragni. It used to be a 4 day event and used to host pretty amazing singers and bands.
Fee Structure And Facilities :
It was quite decent back when I was studying. It was Rs. 19,000 per semester for tuition. Mess food would cost around 1200. But now I hear it has gone up 5 fold, but I don't have the figures. You can get this online.
Fees and Financial Aid :
Well the MCM (merit cum means) fellowship is the most common one availed by students from disadvantaged backgrounds. But I did not qualify for it given my parent's income level.
Campus Life :
The gender ratio was 16:1, Sports infrastructure is best among IITs. I can guarantee that no campus can offer the kind of sports and lecture halls infrastructure that IIT Kanpur.
Alumni/Alumna :
The alumni are super helpful, and seniors at college are really helpful too. It's a great idea to participate in as much clubs etc as you can, just so you get to know more seniors. But the alumni network is not well managed and there is a lot more that can be done.
Exam Structure :
The first year is common and that was okay. Second year was slightly lesser workload. But third year was absolutely very hectic with over 45 contact hours and labs, assignments etc. We had two midsem exams and also quizzes in between.
Faculty :
The professors had a top class education themselves and most were great researchers in their field. So, there was no worries as far as qualification goes. However, most were either not interested in teaching or not interested in building good relationship with students (especially the younger ones).
