New Delhi: The Australian government has made their requirements for student visas stricter than before due to an increase in the number of students migrating to Australia. Studying in Australia with a Temporary Graduate Visa (TGV) now requires you to have a minimum overall IELTS score of 6.5 with a score of at least 5.5 in all the components of the IELTS test (i.e., reading, writing, speaking, and listening).
If you’re applying for a student visa, you will need a minimum IELTS score of 6.0. Any student visa applications submitted from March 23, 2024, onwards must meet these requirements to have their visas approved. This change is part of Australia’s updated Migration Strategy, which came into effect on December 11, 2023. Additionally, Australia may also increase the requirements for financial proof from the student. Students must show savings of at least USD 24, 505, which is 17% more than the financial requirements in Australia’s previous policy.
Why Are The New Requirements By the Australian Government Stricter Than Before?
The new requirements are a way for Australia to combat the pressure on housing and construction due to the influx of migrants from all over the world. The influx was mostly thanks to their previous policy, which sought to increase the number of skilled workers and students in their country after COVID-19.
Other changes to the visa application include the Genuine Student (GS) requirement, which focuses on the academic intentions of students applying to study in Australia, including the course one chooses or one’s previous academic records.
In a statement on the new policy, the Home Minister of Australia Clare O’Neil said, "The move will continue to drive migration levels down while delivering on our commitments in the migration strategy to fix the broken system we inherited."
